Punjab: Another unit of Ropar thermal plant shut

Ropar, February 15: The power supply to several areas of Punjab was hit and power crisis further deepened due to the closure of another unit of 210 MW of Ropar thermal plant. 

Notably, only one unit of plant is currently running and other three units of Ropar thermal plant has faced a shut down due to some technical glitches.

As per the sources, 7 of 15 thermal plant units are shut in Punjab. Thus, production of more than half of the total 5680 MW installed capacity of 2860 MW was stopped. 

At present there is a demand of 8800 MW of electricity in Punjab.

According to the information received, Powercom has purchased 27.93 million units of electricity at an average rate of Rs 6.57 per unit at a cost of Rs 18.34 crore. 

So far this month, Powercom has purchased 316.65 million units of electricity at a cost of Rs 180.10 crore, at an average price of Rs 5.69 per unit.

Notably, the power supply has further deepened due to the closure of six thermal plant units. 

The two units of 660 MW unit of Talwandi Sabo Thermal Plant has been closed due to technical failure. 

Similarly, one unit of Rajpura thermal plant has been closed due to overhauling of 700MW. 

Likewisely, two units of Ropar thermal plant (210 MW each) has been closed. One unit has been closed due to over hauling and the other due to the boiler leakage.

Meanwhile, one unit of state-owned Lehra Mohabbat thermal plant has been closed since May 2022 amid developing a technical snag, hitting the power supply by 210 MW.
