Punjab air pollution: Mohali, Amritsar and Chandigarh were among the most polluted cities in Punjab following Diwali celebrations. Notably, the air quality in Mohali reached hazardous levels, with an AQI of 369, placing it among the most polluted cities in the country.
Amritsar recorded an AQI of 339, followed by Chandigarh at 311, indicating a significant increase in pollution levels due to massive fireworks celebrations on Thursday and Friday.
According to data from the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), Amritsar's AQI readings were very similar to Delhi's, which is widely regarded as one of India's most polluted regions.
By late Friday evening, Amritsar's AQI had soared to 350, forcing officials to consider imposing "Level 3" restrictions if air quality did not improve soon. Meanwhile, Chandigarh experienced a brief drop from 302 AQI at midday, but experts warn that this drop will most likely be brief.
Other Punjab cities recorded high pollution levels on Saturday morning, including Ludhiana (266), Jalandhar (225), Khanna (220), Mandi Gobindgarh (236), and Patiala (231).
