Meeting called at Sri Akal Takht Sahib on December 2; Sukhbir Singh Badal, others summoned
PTC Web Desk: A key meeting of Panj Singh Sahibaan has been called at Sri Akal Takht Sahib on December 2. The meeting will include prominent figures such as Sukhbir Singh Badal, along with Sikh ministers who were part of the Cabinet from 2007 to 2017. Besides, members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee’s interim committee and the Akali Dal Core Committee from 2015 have also been summoned.
The meeting has been called by the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Raghbir Singh at 1 pm. It is learnt that an important discussion regarding the issues related to the Shiromani Akali Dal and the ongoing matters of the Sikh community would be made.
The president of the SGPC, Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, along with all relevant secretaries, has been instructed to be present in person before Sri Akal Takht Sahib on this occasion.
Besdies, an explanation has also been sought from former Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib Giani Gurbachan Singh, former Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Giani Gurmukh Singh and former Jathedar of Takht Sri Patna Sahib Giani Iqbal Singh.
Notably, Sukhbir Singh Badal, who was declared tankhaiya (guilty of religious misconduct) for actions during his party's tenure in power from 2007 to 2017, recently urged Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh to expedite the resolution of his case.
In a letter dated November 18, Sukhbir Singh Badal, now resigned as SAD chief, expressed his desire to appear before the Akal Takht as a “humble Sikh.”
Sukhbir Singh Badal was declared tankhaiya on August 30, 2024, and since then, the Sikh community has awaited a decision from the Panj Singh Sahiban (Sikh clergy). On November 15, three days before submitting his resignation, Sukhbir Singh Badal appealed to Giani Raghbir Singh to convene a meeting of the clergy to pronounce his tankhah (religious punishment), citing the prolonged delay.
On November 18, SAD's working committee met to deliberate on Sukhbir Singh Badal's resignation. However, the decision was deferred, with the party opting to consult SGPC members and district-level leaders before finalising the matter.
Balwinder Singh Bhunder, the party's working president who chaired the meeting, said, "The issue requires careful consideration, and discussions with all stakeholders are essential before taking a final decision."
