Ludhiana gas leak: Hydrogen sulphide in manholes declines to a lower level; Giaspura locality remain cordoned off
PTC Web Desk: A part of Giaspura locality in Ludhiana district of Punjab, where 11 persons died allegedly after inhaling toxic gas (suspected to be hydrogen sulphide), continues to remain cordoned off on Monday.
In a statement issued on Monday, SDM Ludhiana West, Punjab, Swati said the situation was under observation. "We are monitoring gas levels every 2 hours. A technical team has been formed by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), which will examine the disposal of all he industry's waste here. Investigation is on in the matter. Injured are undergoing treatment."
As per information, a portion of the Giaspura locality underwent a night-long decontamination process. As per officials, teams of the PPCB checked what led to the buildup of hydrogen sulphide in the sewer that might have led to the tragedy. However, it is also learnt that the poisonous gas "is no longer being detected in the air".
Gas leak has left 3 kids among 11 dead
Three children among 11 persons died after allegedly inhaling toxic gas on April 30. Giaspura locality is very thickly populated area. Since high levels of hydrogen sulphide were detected in the air, it is being suspected that the toxic air emanated from a sewer. Four more people are under treatment. All victims lbelonged to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Magisterial probe ordered; FIR against unknown persons
A magisterial probe has been ordered and an FIR has been lodged against unknown persons.
As per information, the level of Hydrogen sulphide in manholes was high at night, but it has declined to a lower level after chemical decontamination.
