Jagjit Singh Dallewal critical, health parameters down; farmer leader stops drinking water
PTC Web Desk: The farmers' protest at Shambhu and Khanauri borders in Punjab, demanding legal guarantees for Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops, has entered its second month. Farmer leader jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on a hunger strike for 32 days, having stopped drinking water as well. Despite his deteriorating health, Dallewal has refused medical assistance and is determined to continue his protest.
According to farmer leader Abhimanyu Kohad, Dallewal’s medical bulletin reports his blood pressure at a dangerously low 88/59. Doctors are concerned about his weakened pulse and immunity, as he has not consumed any water since last evening, after suffering from vomiting.
In response to the ongoing protest, a meeting will be held in all districts of Punjab on Saturday to finalise the strategy for the upcoming Punjab Bandh on December 30. The bandh, from 7 am to 4 pm, will see a halt in buses, trains, and the closure of both government and private institutions. Announcements will be made in all village gurdwaras to inform the public about the shutdown.
Dallewal has written two letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to accept farmers' demands for a legal guarantee on MSP and loan waivers. A massive “Maha Panchayat” is planned in Hisar, Haryana on December 29 in support of the farmers' cause, with participation from Uttar Pradesh’s khap panchayats. The Supreme Court will hear the matter regarding Dallewal's health on January 2.
