IRS officer shot dead by father-in-law in Chandigarh Court

In a shocking incident, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer was shot dead by his father-in-law. The incident occurred on Saturday at the Chandigarh District Court.

IRS officer shot dead by father-in-law in Chandigarh Court

PTC News Desk: In a shocking incident, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer was shot dead by his father-in-law. The incident occurred on Saturday at the Chandigarh District Court.

IRS Officer Harpreet Singh was shot dead by his father-in-law, Malvinder Singh Sidhu, a former Assistant Inspector General (AIG) of Punjab Police. 


Harpreet Singh was in court for a hearing on his ongoing divorce case. According to police records, Harpreet and his wife were both present in court and were directed to the mediation centre for counselling.

During the session, Malvinder Singh Sidhu asked to use the bathroom and took Harpreet with him under the pretence of asking for directions. Sidhu fired five rounds from outside the mediation centre, two of which struck Harpreet Singh.

Bystanders swiftly aided Harpreet, and his family rushed him to the hospital. Despite medical intervention, Harpreet Singh succumbed to his injuries.

The police have arrested Malvinder Singh Sidhu, and the investigation is currently underway.

Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur, on the firing incident at Chandigarh District Court, said, "We received information regarding the firing at the District Court's Mediation Centre at 2 p.m. today. Police arrived at the scene and found that the victim's name was Harpreet Singh. He was rushed to the hospital, but he died there. The alleged accused was arrested on the spot and placed into police custody, with a weapon recovered from him."

The alleged accused is Malvinder Singh, a retired AIG of the Punjab Police. The FSL team has been notified, and the location is being investigated. We are also speaking with eyewitnesses. The gate from which the suspected accused entered the courthouse is being investigated. We recovered a.32 bore pistol from him, along with four fired and three unused bullets... Divorce proceedings were ongoing between the two families, and today marked the fourth meeting at the Mediation Centre. Further investigation is underway," he added.
