Lok Sabha Session 2024: The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha began on Monday, which will witness the oath-taking ceremony of newly-elected Members of Parliament, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha held from June 24 and to conclude on July 3 for oath/affirmation of newly elected Members. The 264th Session of Rajya Sabha will also commence on June 27 and conclude on July 3.
The newly elected Lok Sabha members from Punjab are scheduled to take their oaths on June 25.
Among the list of newly elected Lok Sabha members from Punjab include the name of jailed ‘Waris Punjab De’ head Amritapl Singh who won from Khadoor Sahib seat by defeating Congress' Kulbir Singh Zira.
As per the latest update, the National Security Act (NSA) detention of Waris Punjab De head and newly elected MP from Khadoor Sahib Amritpal Singh and nine of his associates has been extended by one year.
The original NSA detention period for Amritpal Singh and three associates was set to expire on July 24, while the NSA detention for six other associates was due to end on June 18.
Noting that the National Security Act (NSA) detention of Waris Punjab De head and newly elected MP from Khadoor Sahib Amritpal Singh and nine of his associates has been extended by one year, it is evident that Amritpal Singh will not be able to attend the oath-taking ceremony scheduled for June 25.
According to Advocate Rajdev Singh Khalsa, who represents Amritpal Singh, every newly elected MP receives a designated time slot from the Parliament Office to take their oath. Amritpal Singh was also informed of his scheduled time via the phone number registered under his name. However, it seems that it is impossible for him to attend the oath ceremony.
Waris Punjab De head Amritpal Singh was arrested from Moga’s Rode village on April 23, 2023, after a more than one-month-long manhunt. Following his arrest, NSA was invoked against him and he was sent to Dibrugarh jail in Assam.
Amritpal Singh and his associates have been charged in multiple criminal cases, including spreading communal disharmony, attempted murder, assaults on police personnel, and obstructing public servants in the lawful discharge of their duties.
