Heavy rain lashed Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on Sunday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for the day.

Heavy rain lashes Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana; orange alert issued

PTC News Desk: Heavy rain lashed Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh on Sunday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for the day.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Chandigarh, Haryana, and Punjab on Sunday, predicting heavy to very heavy rain in isolated regions. It has also predicted higher rainfall from August 12 to 15.


Heavy rains in Punjab

Heavy rain fell in Punjab's Jalandhar, flooding low-lying areas and creating traffic jams. Rainwater entered homes in Jalandhar's low-lying areas. Waterlogging affected many regions of the city, disrupting people's everyday travel. Vehicles and people are seen wading through the waterlogged streets.

Mohali, Ludhiana, Amritsar and Rupnagar all experienced heavy rainfall.

Chandigarh Rainfall

A mere two hours of rainfall in Chandigarh on Sunday revealed the city's monsoon readiness, with citizens wading through knee-deep water. The city received 110 mm of rain.

Continuous rain for only two hours caused major waterlogging, with critical roundabouts in sectors 34, 20, 27/28, and 35, as well as areas such as Manimajra, Khuda Ali Sher, Khuda Lahora, and Maloya, becoming inundated.

Heavy downpour in Haryana

Several areas in neighbouring Haryana also experienced heavy rain on Sunday. Heavy rain affected daily life in Ambala. Many parts of the city experienced waterlogging.

The India Meteorological Department expected thunderstorms and lightning along with moderate rain in Kurukshetra, Ambala, Yamunanagar, and Panchkula.

"ThunderstormLightning with Moderate Rain very likely over parts of Kurukshetra, Ambala, Yamunanagar, Panchkula," IMD Chandigarh said.

IMD also predicted moderate to heavy rains, along with moderate thunderstorms and lightning across multiple parts of Haryana.

"Moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by moderate thunderstorms and lightning is very likely to occur at Rajaund, Assandh, Jind, Gohana, Rohtak, Jhajjar, Farukhnagar (Haryana) Kotputli, Alwar, and Viratnagar (Rajasthan)."
