Guru Nanak Dev ji Gurpurb 2024: In a grand celebration of the 555th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first Guru of Sikhism, a divine Nagar Kirtan was organised in Amritsar. The event, organised by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, commenced from Sri Akal Takht Sahib after a prayer in the afternoon, following a traditional procession in a golden palanquin, adorned with holy Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
The Nagar Kirtan was led by Panj Pyare. Various musical bands, Gatka (martial arts) teams, Shabad Kirtan groups, and Sikh religious societies participated. Devotees gathered in large numbers to be part of the event, which was marked by both spiritual reverence and joyous celebration.
The procession made its way through the historic streets of Amritsar, passing through the prominent markets of Ramdas Sarai, Saran Gate, Virasati Marg, Mai Seva Bazaar, Papranwala Bazaar, and Laxman Sar Chowk, all of which lie within the sacred precincts of Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple). The event culminated at Sri Darbar Sahib in the evening, where the devotees paid obeisance after completing the journey.
Along the route, the devotees welcomed the procession with a shower of flowers, perfumed water sprays, and decorative gates. The Sangat also extended their hospitality by serving Langar (free community meals) at various points during the procession, ensuring that no devotee went hungry.
The Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Raghubir Singh, extended best wishes to the Sangat on the sacred occasion of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birth anniversary. He emphasised that the teachings and philosophy of Guru Nanak Dev Ji continue to guide humanity towards spiritual fulfillment and societal harmony. He called upon the Sangat to follow the path shown by Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Giani Raghubir Singh highlighted that the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji offer solutions to the challenges faced by mankind and encouraged the devotees to lead their lives in accordance with the Guru’s divine wisdom. He stressed that the path of humanity, as laid down by the Guru, is the key to solving the complexities and challenges of life.
As part of the celebrations, the historic artifacts associated with Guru Nanak Dev Ji will be displayed for public viewing on November 15 at Sri Harmandir Sahib, Sri Akal Takht Sahib, and Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai. These artifacts, deeply connected to the life and times of Guru Nanak, will be available for darshan from 9 am to 12 noon, giving Sangat an opportunity to connect with the rich history of the Sikh faith.
In addition to the exhibition, an Amrit Sanchar (Baptism ceremony) will be held at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, where devotees will have the opportunity to partake in the sacred initiation into the Sikh faith. The evening will conclude with Rehras Sahib (evening prayer) followed by a spectacular pollution-free fireworks display.
