Amritsar, June 16: Giani Raghbir Singh, the current Jathedar of Takht Sri Keshgarh Sahib, has been appointed as the new Jathedar of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, the highest temporal seat of authority for Sikhs.
The selection process involved discussions regarding potential candidates, including Giani Raghbir Singh, Giani Malkit Singh, and Baba Tek Singh Mastuana Sahib. Ultimately, Giani Raghbir Singh was chosen as the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takhat Sahib, symbolizing his elevation to the highest Sikh organisation.
The decision was taken on Friday at an emergency meeting of the SGPC executive body that took place here. However, Giani Harpreet Singh, will continue to be the Jathedar of the Takht Damdama Sahib in Bathinda. Giani Harpreet Singh himself relinquished the charge.
While addressing the mediapersons on Friday, SGPC chief Harjinder Singh Dhami said Giani Harpreet Singh, who was the acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht, himself expressed his wish to relinquish the charge.
"At our executive body meeting, we decided that Giani Harpreet Singh will continue to be the Jathedar of the Takht Damdama Sahib," Dhami said.
Giani Raghbir Singh was born on March 29, 1970, in Sultanwind village, Pati Mansoor, Sri Amritsar Sahib. He is the son of Sardar Bachan Singh and Sardarni Savinder Kaur and has two daughters and a son. His journey of service began in 1989 when he was admitted as an Akhand Pathi. He became a Granthi Singh in 1982 and served in various locations from 1992 to 1995. In 1995, he started his service as Panch Pyara at Shri Akal Takhat Sahib and continued in that role until April 21, 2014.
On April 21, 2014, Giani Raghbir Singh took on the seva (service) at Sachkhand Sri Harimandar Sahib, representing Granthi Singh. Following the passing of Jathedar Giani Mall Singh of Takht Shri Keshgarh Sahib, he assumed the role of Acting Jathedar, while also serving as Granthi Singh at Sachkhand Shri Harminder Sahib.
Throughout his service, Giani Raghbir Singh has diligently fulfilled his responsibilities, striving to connect people from different countries and backgrounds with the sanctity of Shri Akal Takhat Sahib and the Guru's teachings. His dedication and concentration have been instrumental in his role as a spiritual leader.
