Canadian dream shatters: Canada- The most-hyped country where most Indians are settled. Canada is a popular destination for international students, immigrants, and temporary workers, and it offers several attractive opportunities and qualities that make it a desirable choice for young Punjabi individuals

The primary reasons for the huge emigration of young Indians to foreign lands, mainly Canada, are complex. While it is important to note that not all Indian students studying abroad confront catastrophic circumstances, significant proportions do so for a variety of compelling reasons.


In recent times, dreams of Punjabi youth pursuing education in Canada are turning into nightmares, with many grappling with mental health issues, robbery and murder cases and Punjabis are tragically losing their lives shortly after arriving in Canada. 

Several recent cases of deaths of Punjabi youths in Canada have created a state of panic back home in India. Now parents are either not willing to send their children abroad or whose wards are already settled there are in a state of anxiety and panic. 

Here are 5 tragic tales Punjabi immigrants whose lives were cut short in Canada in 2023 


Jaswinder Singh Tona

In a heart-wrenching and tragic incident, 24-year-old Punjabi youth Jaswinder Singh Tony died of a heart attack in Canada in August 2023. 

Hailing from Raikot in Punjab's Ludhiana district and a sole brother to four sisters, Jaswinder Singh Tona moved to Canada on January 27, 2019, with a work permit for Brampton and lived in Abbotsford with four friends.

However, fate had other plans, and tragedy struck unexpectedly and Jaswinder Singh Tony's died of a sudden heart attack. 

Jaswinder Singh is survived by his parents and four sisters. He was the only earning member of the family. 

Mohit Sharma

An another fateful incident sent shocks to shockwaves through the Punjabi community in Canada, as 28-year-old youth in Ontario Mohit Sharma was murdered in January 2023 with the intent of robbery. The robbers took everything found on his body, including jewellery, a phone, a purse, an ATM, and money.

Hailing from Punjab's Chandeli village and only single child, Mohit had gone to Canada for higher education five years ago and used to work as a manager in a company.

Seeking justice, the family members of the deceased have reached out to Union Minister Som Prakash, demanding that the culprits be identified and punished.

Manpreet Kaur

In another tragic loss, 22-year-old Punjabi woman, Manpreet Kaur, a resident of Hamidi village of Barnala district in Punjab died in Canada’s Toronto due to cardiac arrest. 

Kaur had gone to Canada on study visa in August 2022 and had been living in the city of Toronto pursuing her studies from one of the reputed university of Canada.

Her death is a tragedy and her family is understandably devastated.

Gurvinder Nath

A heart-wrenching series of events unfolded in the small village of Aima Chahal, located in Punjab's Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district in July 2023 when 24-year-old aspiring student Gurvinder Nath on July 9, 2023  during a late-night delivery in Mississauga, near Toronto fell victim to a heinous crime. He was robbed of his car and subjected to a brutal assault. Despite being rushed to the hospital, his injuries proved fatal, and he succumbed to them on July 14, 2023

Few days after son’s death Grief-stricken mother took her own life by consuming pesticides. 

Akashdeep 

In another shattered and heart-breaking incident, 27-year-old youth hailing from Sikri village near Tanda Urmur and Dasuya in Punjab's Hoshiarpur district lost his life in a drowning accident in Canada in August 2023. 

Akashdeep had reportedly shifted to Canada in 2019 on a study visa. He had achieved permanent residency (PR) status in Canada few days before he left the world. In commemoration of this accomplishment, he and some of his friends went to Port Perry lake in Ontario. Unfortunately, Akashdeep drowned in the lake. 

The entire Punjabi community still mourned the loss of the young scholar who had left his homeland with dreams of a promising future.
