Fifth round of talks today between farmers, Centre over MSP demand in Chandigarh
PTC Web Desk: The fifth round of negotiations between farmers protesting at Haryana-Punjab’s Shambhu and Khanauri borders and the Central Government will take place today in Chandigarh. The meeting will see participation from 28 farmer leaders, representing the SKM (non-political) led by jagjit Singh Dallewal and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha led by Sarwan Singh Pandher. The farmers are demanding a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops.
Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike for 81 days, is also likely to attend the meeting. The Central Government will be represented by Union Food Minister Prahlad Joshi, while the Punjab Government will be represented by Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian. The meeting is scheduled to be held at at 5.30 pm in Sector 26, Chandigarh. Sarwan Singh Pandher warned that if the talks failed to yield a resolution, farmers would march towards Delhi.
The farmers’ protest at Shambhu and Khanauri borders began on February 13 when they attempted to march towards Delhi, but were halted by police barricades. Since then, four rounds of discussions have taken place between the protesting farmers and the Central Government in Chandigarh, but no agreement has been reached yet. Previous meetings were attended by Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Arjun Munda, and Nityanand Rai.
