'Chakka Jam' in Punjab: Farmers hold protest against slow paddy procurement, other demands; Check locations

Farmers in Punjab are holding a one day protest on October 26 against the state government in the wake of their several demands including paddy procurement. As a part of demonstration, farmers have announced road blockade at four places including Sangrur, Moga, Phagwara, and Batala and have warned to continue the blockade indefinitely if their demands are not met. The protests have been organised at one location each in these districts.

Sarwan Singh Pandher, leader of the Punjab Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee, announced plans to block highways in the Majha-Malwa-Dooaba region starting October 26 at 1 pm.

Traffic at these places will remain disrupted in wake of the protest. The protest will focus on several issues, including the FIRs filed against farmers for stubble burning, the slow pace of paddy procurement, and the shortage of DAP (Di-ammonium Phosphate) fertiliser.

Farmers have announced that initially this one day protest is against the slow procurement of paddy.

Ad per the officials, out of 11.10 lakh tones of paddy that reached Punjab grain markets, only 10% has been lifted by the procurement agencies highlighting slow procurement of paddy crop.

In view of the situation Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann has urged central government to step in and provide necessary assistance for paddy acquisition.

Key demands of farmers:

Immediate and efficient procurement of paddy.

Withdrawal of FIRs related to stubble burning.

Resolution of the DAP fertiliser supply crisis.

Assurance of fair prices for crops.
