Farmers announce 'Delhi March' from Shambhu border on December 14

PTC Web Desk:  After two unsuccessful attempts earlier, farmer unions have announced another march to Delhi on December 14.  At a meeting held at the Shambhu border on Tuesday, it was decided that Punjab's farmers would march to Delhi on December 14. Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher confirmed this decision during a press conference.

Pandher said the ongoing farmers’ agitation would complete 10 months on December 13, marked by a large gathering. He also raised concerns over the suspension of Internet services in Haryana and reports of similar actions near the Punjab border within a 1.5-km radius.

Pandher said the government had yet to extend an invitation for dialogue, indicating a lack of progress in addressing farmers' demands.

Pandher said two days ago, farmer leader Sardar Major Singh sustained a rubber bullet injury to his forehead while marching to Delhi. He had been referred to PGI for treatment. Many leaders who had recovered from previous injuries were still unable to walk properly.

Pandher said December 11 would be observed as a day of prayer (Ardaas Diwas) across the nation, seeking divine intervention for the success of 'Delhi March; and the health of farmer leader jagjit Singh Dallewal. He urged people to visit their local religious places and offer prayers.

Pandher also called upon singers, religious leaders, and artists in Punjab and other states to support the movement by raising awareness during their public events.

10 months of protest

The farmers’ protest will complete 10 months on December 13, marked by large gatherings at various locations. A farmer leader said there were reports of Internet services being suspended within 1.5 km of the Shambhu border, similar to Haryana, where Internet access was already restricted.

Court denies hearing on border opening petition

Meanwhile, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has refused to hear a public interest petition seeking the reopening of the Shambhu-Khanauri border. The court cited the matter as pending before the Supreme Court and advised the petitioner to approach the apex court. Subsequently, the petitioner withdrew the plea. Earlier, the Supreme Court had also dismissed a similar petition on Monday.

Hunger strike intensifies

Farmers protesting at the Haryana-Punjab Khanauri border continued their hunger strike alongside Dallewal. No food was prepared at the protest site, and locals were asked not to bring community meals (langar).

Pandher said Dallewal's health had deteriorated significantly as his hunger strike entered its 15th day. He was experiencing difficulties in walking and speaking, with his kidneys and liver showing signs of strain.

Pandher claimed that the effects of tear gas shells fired by the police during earlier clashes were still noticeable at the Shambhu border. On Tuesday, farmers organised a cleanup drive to remove garbage and other debris from the site.
