Custodial death in Ropar Jail: Recently released inmate alleges torture of Charanpreet Singh Channi

PTC Web Desk: The wife of an inmate who died in custody at Ropar Jail has filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the circumstances surrounding her husband's death.

The High Court has issued notices to the CBI, the Punjab Government, and other relevant authorities, seeking their responses by September 30.

The case revolves around the death of Charanpreet Singh Channi, who was facing charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Channi died on July 24, while in custody at Ropar Jail. The incident took a turn when a fellow inmate, who was released a day before, informed Channi's wife that her husband had been brutally thrashed by the jail authorities. The inmate revealed that three other prisoners, including Channi, were also assaulted on the same day.

The petitioner, Channi's wife, has alleged that the police had been harassing her husband for long and filing false cases against him. She claimed that the police are now attempting to cover up the truth behind his death, therefore she has sought a CBI investigation into his death.

In a related development, Avinash Singh, a former inmate who spent 14 months in Ropar Jail, has come forward with shocking revelations about the conditions inside the facility. According to Avinash, mobile phones, tobacco, cigarettes, and even prescription drugs are sold openly in the jail at exorbitant prices, with payments being made via Google Pay. He claimed that while the jail staff are not directly involved, they collaborate with certain inmates to run this illicit trade.

Avinash expressed fears for his safety after making these disclosures, stating that he might be falsely implicated in other cases. He warned that if anything happens to him, the jail administration and police should be held accountable.
