Cracks in SYL canal near Rajpura leave officials worried; Nabha power plant at risk

Rajpura, July 9: Major cracks were developed in the SYL canal near Punjab's Rajpura on Sunday, posing a significant threat to operations at the Nabha power plant.

The district administration was left perplexed, following which Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni hurried to the area to review the situation.

The cracks have thrown the district administration into a quandary, as they hustle to plug the gaps.

According to reliable sources from PowerCom, four rooms within the Nabha Thermal Plant were flooded with water. The sources added that employees on the evening shift were unable to enter the plant. Compounding the issue, the water has reportedly infiltrated the coal stock of the plant.

If the water levels fail to recede within the next two hours, the plant's conveyor belt will be rendered inoperable, forcing management to shut down operations.

As per the Indian Army assessment, this is the sheet flow of the Shivalik foothills.

Situation under control

"Waterlogging has been caused by sheet flow due to heavy rains in hilly areas, causing breaches in the SYL canal. But the situation is under control," said Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sahni.
