Cold wave and drizzle sweep Punjab and Chandigarh; yellow alert issued for 21 districts
PTC Web Desk: The weather in Punjab and Chandigarh has changed today with a cold wave accompanied by drizzle. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for 21 districts in Punjab, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds blowing at speeds of 30-40 km per hour.
Hailstorms are also possible in some areas. However, the average temperature in the state has risen by 0.6°C over the past 24 hours, which is 2°C above the normal temperature. The highest temperature recorded was 23.9°C at the Thien Dam in Pathankot.
Rain expected till January 2
Weather changes are expected in several districts of Punjab, including Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Barnala, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, and Malerkotla. These areas may experience thunderstorms and hailstorms. The Meteorological Department predicts light to moderate rain in most parts of the state from December 27 to January 2.
The department advises residents to avoid standing near trees or seeking shelter under them. It's also recommended to postpone outdoor plans whenever possible and stay away from ponds and lakes. Drivers should exercise caution on the roads and park vehicles in safe places. People should secure any items that may be blown away by the wind.
