CJI Chandrachud visits Sri Harmandir Sahib; SGPC submits memo on curbing hate campaigns against Sikhs

Amritsar, August 10: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Saturday visited Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar, where he paid his respects and expressed his deep devotion. Justice Chandrachud also wrote in the visitor’s book, reflecting on the profound significance of offering prayers at such a divine place in the service of the nation and humanity, fulfilling a long-cherished wish.

During his visit, the Chief Justice was warmly received by SGPC president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami.  In a gesture of honour, Advocate Dhami presented Justice Chandrachud with a golden model of Sri Harmandir Sahib, a siropa (robe of honour), and a set of historical books.

On this occasion, Advocate Dhami also presented a memorandum to the Chief Justice, bringing to his attention the alarming rise in organised hate campaigns targeting the Sikh community on social media platforms. The SGPC president expressed deep concern over unchecked spread of hate propaganda, which he stated has not been adequately addressed by both the Government of India and respective state governments.

Advocate Dhami said despite the significant contributions and sacrifices made by Sikhs for the nation, malicious individuals were deliberately spreading hateful comments about Sikh principles, history, traditions, and identity on social media.

He said the SGPC had passed several resolutions on this matter and communicated them to the government, urging strict measures to curb this ongoing hate speech. However, these issues remain unresolved, despite the Supreme Court’s firm stance against communal and hateful expressions on social media.

In his appeal, Advocate Dhami called upon the Chief Justice, as the highest judicial authority in India, to take serious note of this issue and instruct the authorities to take decisive action against those responsible for these organised hate campaigns. He said such efforts were disrupting communal harmony and pose a significant threat to the peaceful coexistence of communities in the country.
