Chandigarh liquor shops to remain shut as HC halts new allotments
PTC Web Desk: Chandigarh's liquor vends will remain closed from April 1 to 3 as the Punjab and Haryana High Court has put a temporary stay on the allocation of new vends until April 3. The decision comes after multiple petitioners challenged the tendering and allotment process, alleging favouritism.
According to the petitioners, 91 out of 97 liquor vends in the city have been allotted to a single group, effectively granting it a monopoly over liquor sales in Chandigarh. Taking note of the allegations, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a notice to the Chandigarh administration, seeking a response. Until the next hearing, the court has put a hold on the allotment process. However, liquor vends that were allotted last year will continue to operate until March 31.
