Punjab bus services resume as Punjab Roadways and PRTC contractual workers call off strike

PTC Web Desk: The Punjab Roadways and PRTC contractual workers’ three-day strike, which started on Monday, was called off on Day 2 after a meeting of the protesters with the administration.

Contractual employees of Punjab Roadways and Pepsu Road Transportation Corporation began the strike to press their demands, including regularisation of their services. Due to the strike, commuters were left stranded at various bus stands across the state.

However, in the view of the hardships being faced by the commuters, a  meeting was held with the administration, and a meeting with the Chief Minister has now been scheduled for January 15. The protesters also submitted a memorandum of demands to the SDM.

The protesters are demanding the regularisation of services of contractual drivers and conductors. They said there has to be a pay parity between regular and contractual staff. "The Transport Department should not encourage contractors to operate buses and purchase new buses instead," the protesters demanded.

One of the protesters said the drivers and conductors were receiving salaries in two categories. The first batch of drivers and conductors was getting a salary of Rs 18,000 per month. In the second batch, the drivers were getting Rs 13,000 per month, while the conductors were getting Rs 12,000 per month only.
