Bathinda: Two-year-old girl among eight dead as bus plunges into filthy drain on Bathinda-Talwandi Sabo Road

PTC Web Desk: Eight passengers were killed when a bus plunged into a filthy drain on the Bathinda-Talwandi Sabo Road following heavy rainfall on Friday. The bus fell from a bridge as the railing was missing. 

Deputy Commissioner Shaukat Ahmed Pareh said a private bus travelling from Sardulgarh to Bathinda plunged into a filthy drain near Jeevan Singh Wala village. Following the accident, the district administration and police teams swiftly arrived at the site and, with the assistance of the NDRF and local volunteers, rescued passengers from the ill-fated bus.


According to the Deputy Commissioner, 46 passengers were involved in the tragic accident, of whom eight have been declared dead. The injured have been admitted to Talwandi Sabo Hospital and the District Hospital in Bathinda.

The deceased have been identified as Balkar Singh (driver) of Mansa; Mukhtiyar Kaur of Jiwan Singh Wala, Najar Singh (physically disabled) from Haryana, Ravneet Kaur (17) of Fazilka, Amandeep Kaur (30) of Jiwan Singh Wala and her daughter Puneet Kaur (2), Paramjeet Kaur (25) from Fatehabad, Haryana and Arjan Kumar (35) from Bihar. The district administration has set up a control room to assist the public. The helpline numbers are 97801-00498 and 96468-15951.

The deceased include a two-year-old girl and her mother. Also among the deceased was a differently abled person from Haryana. The deceased driver has been identified as Balkaar Singh, a resident of Mansa.

The DC said passengers aboard the bus reported that the driver was driving at high speed. When a large truck appeared from the opposite direction, the bus swerved to avoid it, leading to the accident.

Efforts are ongoing to ensure all possible support is extended to those affected by the incident.
