AAP MLA Gurpreet Gogi Bassi dies in accidental shooting at Ludhiana residence
PTC Web Desk: In a tragic incident, Gurpreet Gogi Bassi , an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Ludhiana West, Punjab, passed away after being accidentally shot at his residence. The incident occurred around midnight while Gogi was reportedly cleaning his licensed pistol. A misfire caused a bullet to pierce through his head, leading to his death.
According to the police investigation, Gurpreet Gogi Bassi was handling his .25 bore licensed pistol when it accidentally discharged. Family members and security personnel rushed him to Dayanand Medical College (DMC), where doctors declared him dead upon arrival.
Deputy Commissioner Jitendra Jorwal and Police Commissioner Kuldeep Chahal reached the hospital soon after receiving the news. The authorities later visited Gogi’s residence to assess the situation.
Assistant Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Jaskaran Singh Teja confirmed that an investigation is underway, and it would be premature to draw conclusions about the circumstances of the incident. The body has been sent for post-mortem, after which it will be handed over to the family.
On the day of the incident, Gurpreet Gogi Bassi had attended multiple public events, including a meeting with AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal. He returned home in the evening and instructed his staff to prepare dinner.
Shortly afterward, the sound of a gunshot startled his family. His wife, Dr Sukhchain Kaur, along with their son and a household staff member, rushed to his room to find Gogi lying in a pool of blood. Immediate efforts were made to take him to the hospital, but he could not be saved.
AAP Punjab president Aman Arora arrived at Gogi’s residence early in the morning and expressed condolences to the family. Arora described Gogi as a hardworking and dedicated leader.
Gogi was elected MLA from Ludhiana West in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, defeating Congress leader and former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu by a significant margin of 40,000 votes.
Before joining AAP, Gogi was a longstanding Congress member, serving for 23 years. He was elected as a municipal councillor three times and also served as the district president of Congress from 2014 to 2019. Additionally, he held the position of Chairman of the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation (PSIEC) during the Congress regime.
Gogi joined AAP shortly before the 2022 elections, distancing himself from Congress after being overlooked for the Ludhiana Mayor’s post.
Gogi gained attention during the 2022 Assembly elections by filing his nomination on a 1990-model Priya scooter. He described it as a “lucky scooter” gifted by his mother, which he had used throughout college and for all significant occasions.
