40 years of 1984 Sikh Genocide: Akal Takht Jathedar urges Sikhs to observe Bandi Chhor Divas with ghee lamps only
PTC Web Desk: Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Raghbir Singh, has called on the Sikh community to observe Bandi Chhor Divas on November 1 by lighting only ghee lamps, urging against the use of electric decorations. The directive comes as the Sikh community marks 40 years since the 1984 Sikh genocide, which began on the same date.
In an official statement issued by the Akal Takht Secretariat, the Jathedar reminded Sikhs of the brutal massacre carried out under the patronage of the Congress government in 1984. He stated that over 110 cities, including the national capital, Delhi, witnessed a premeditated ethnic cleansing against Sikhs, resulting in widespread violence.
"As we approach the 40th anniversary of this 1984 Sikh genocide, it is a time for reflection and remembrance of the struggle the Sikh community has endured over the past four decades," Giani Raghbir Singh said. He added that despite facing immense challenges, Sikhs had shown unwavering resilience in re-establishing their identity.
The Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar also noted that November 1 coincided with Bandi Chhor Divas, commemorating the release of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji from Gwalior Fort. To honour this day, Giani Raghbir Singh directed that only Sri Harmandir Sahib and Akal Takht Sahib would feature electric lighting, while all other Sikh congregations worldwide should illuminate gurdwaras and homes using only ghee lamps.
This symbolic gesture, he said, was to remember the sacrifices made by the Sikh community and to pay homage to the enduring legacy of Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.
