Chandigarh administration to earmark 12 designated points for auto pick and drop

PTC News Desk: Autorickshaws in Chandigarh will soon be not allowed to halt anywhere to drop their commuters. The Chandigarh administration is going to launch a pilot project under which 12 designated points along Madhya Marg will be established  for auto-rickshaws to pick and drop their commuters.

Madhya Marg is the central point of the city where maximum traffic is inundated making it a first choice for this pilot project. There are at least 6,000 autos registered in Chandigarh in addition to 500 each from Punjab and Haryana which are allowed to ply in the city.

A tender for the same has been issued by the UT engineering department in regard with the project spanning across 12 sectors in the city. The work is expected to be completed within two months, with an estimated expenditure of ₹13.15 lakh.

In comparison with the buses and cabs, autorickshaws are considered as most traffic rule violators and as per the official data, 1,008 challans were issued to auto-rickshaw drivers for violations of the Safe Transportation Policy for Students (STRAPS) set by the UT transport department which is five times higher than the challans issued to school buses or cabs.

During the meeting of the UT engineering department, the issue of autorickshaw parking menace was raised highlighting the safety of the nature. Once the administration earmark the designated points, challans will also be issued to rule-offenders
