President Murmu appoints Justice DY Chandrachud as Chief Justice of India
New Delhi, October 17: The President of India on Monday appointed Justice Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud as Chief Justice of Justice. He will assume office on November 9, 2022. After the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice of India, UU Lalit, Justice Chandrachud will serve as the 50th Chief Justice of India. He will have a tenure till November 10, 2024, making it one of the longest terms for a CJI in the recent past. Last week, outgoing CJI UU Lalit recommended Justice DY Chandrachud's name as his successor to the Centre in accordance with the convention. Justice Chandrachud's father, Justice YV Chandrachud, served as the 16th Chief Justice of India from 2 February 1978 to 11 July 1985. He was a member of the Constitution Benches, which legalised consensual homosexuality and recognised privacy as a fundamental right under Article 21. He was among those who defended the right of women of all ages to enter the Sabarimala temple. Justice Chandrachud also served on the five-judge panel that ruled the Ayodhya-Babri Masjid case.
