Portals of Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand close for winter
Gopeshwar, October 10: The portals of famous Sikh gurdwara, Hemkund Sahib, were closed on Monday for the winter season. On the last day of the pilgrimage on Monday, more than 1,400 devotees were present, said senior manager of gurdwara Seva Singh. Despite heavy snowfall in the area for the past few days, a large number of devotees visited the gurdwara to see the ceremonial closure. For the convenience of the devotees, Sikh volunteers were seen removing fresh snow from the gurdwara premises. As many as 2.25 lakh devotees visited Hemkund Sahib this season. Hemkund Sahib, situated at an altitude of 15,225 feet, received up to two inches of snow, dropping the temperature here to minus. Hemkund Sahib has been covered with a white sheet of snow as snowfall started in high-altitude areas due to changes in weather and rain. After the bad weather in high-altitude places, it is continuously snowing. The gurdwara management trust has further urged the visitors and devotees to plan their pilgrimage according to the schedule. This gurdwara is one of the most revered Sikh pilgrimage sites. Hemkunt Sahib (also known as Hemkund Sahib) is visited by thousands of devotees from all over the globe every summer. The shrine is situated beside a lake and it is believed that the 10th Sikh Guru, Gobind Singh, had meditated at the site.
