Union Cabinet okays 'One Nation, One Election' Bill: Reports

PTC Web Desk: The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the 'One Nation, One Election' Bill, according to sources. The Bill, which seeks to synchronise Lok Sabha and state Assembly elections, is a key priority for the government. It could be introduced during the ongoing winter session or the upcoming Budget session next year, as per people familiar with the matter.

In September, the Union Cabinet approved a report by a high-powered committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind, endorsing the simultaneous elections proposal.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the move, stating, "The Cabinet has accepted the recommendations of the High-Level Committee on Simultaneous Elections." He also acknowledged former President Kovind's leadership, saying, "I commend Shri Ram Nath Kovind Ji for consulting a wide range of stakeholders. This step will make our democracy more vibrant and participative," in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

The committee suggested conducting concurrent elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies initially, followed by synchronised local body elections within 100 days.

On Wednesday, former President Kovind emphasised the need for consensus on this initiative. "This is not about the interest of any political party but the nation," he said, describing the proposal as a "game-changer." Citing economists, he noted that implementing 'One Nation, One Election' could boost India’s GDP by 1-1.5%.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also voiced support for the proposal, highlighting the challenges posed by frequent elections. "Frequent elections waste significant time and public funds. As a minister, I spent three months campaigning during elections, which halts development work and forces new announcements," Chouhan said, as reported by ANI.

The 'One Nation, One Election' initiative aims to streamline the electoral process, reduce resource wastage, and enhance governance efficiency.
