Shiromani Akali Dal to contest Punjab MC elections, announces Dr Daljit Singh Cheema
PTC Web Desk: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Friday convened a core committee meeting in Chandigarh following an alleged attack on senor party leader Sukhbir Singh Badal at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. During the meeting, senior leader Dr Daljit Singh Cheema announced that the party would contest the upcoming municipal corporation elections, reversing its earlier decision to abstain from last month’s byelections.
Ahead of the meeting, SGPC president Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami met Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh for discussions lasting over an hour. Subsequently, the SGPC announced a meeting in Amritsar on December 9.
During the Chandigarh meeting, Dr Cheema confirmed that the SAD would field candidates in elections for four municipal corporations and 43 municipal councils. This marks a significant political decision amidst ongoing tensions within the party.
This meeting is the first since Sri Akal Takht Sahib questioned SAD's governance and decision-making during its tenure in power. On December 2, Sri Akal Takht Sahib directed the formation of a new Akali Dal within six months, emphasising the inclusion of fresh faces in leadership roles.
Meanwhile, Sukhbir Singh Badal continues his 10-day sewa at five gurdwaras as instructed by Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Sukhbir Singh Badal’s resignation as party president is expected to be accepted soon, with a report to be submitted to Sri Akal Takht Sahib. The core committee is likely to deliberate on the process for this leadership transition.
Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh has instructed both the disgraced and rebel factions to unite and work collectively for the revival of the SAD.
