Respect Ambedkar? Sack Amit Shah by midnight: Mallikarjun Kharge to PM Modi

PTC Web Desk: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Wednesday slammed Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his remarks on Dr BR Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha, demanding an immediate apology and his removal from the Union Cabinet. Kharge urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to sack Shah by midnight, asserting that this would demonstrate true respect for the Dalit icon.

Speaking at a press conference, Kharge warned of nationwide protests if the Prime Minister failed to act. “Amit Shah should apologise for his remarks, and if PM Modi truly respects Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, he must remove Shah from the Union Cabinet by midnight. He has no right to remain in the Cabinet. If no action is taken, people will protest and are even willing to sacrifice their lives for Dr. BR Ambedkar," Kharge said.

Notably, a political war of words erupted between the Congress and the BJP after Union Home Minister Amit Shah remarked that the Congress had made it a "fashion" to repeatedly invoke Dr  BR Ambedkar's name.

Speaking in a critical tone, Amit Shah said, "Abhi ek fashion ho gaya hai - Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Ambedkar. Itna naam agar bhagwan ka lete to saat janmon tak swarg mil jata" (It has become a fashion to say Ambedkar repeatedly. If they had taken God’s name so many times, they would have earned a place in heaven for seven lifetimes).

The Congress condemned Amit Shah's statement, accusing him of disrespecting the Dalit icon. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge demanded his resignation from the Union Cabinet and a public apology. Congress MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, staged a protest on the Parliament premises, holding pictures of Ambedkar and denouncing Shah's remarks as an insult to his legacy.
