Rajnath Singh criticises Bengal for lack of efforts in doctor's murder case: 'Not making sincere efforts'

PTC News Desk: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh took a veiled swipe at the Mamata Banerjee-led Bengal government on Friday, criticising the state's handling of the recent rape and murder case involving a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital.

Speaking at an event in Thiruvananthapuram, Singh highlighted the central government’s firm stance on crimes against women but implied that many states, including Bengal, have not shown sufficient commitment to addressing such issues.

Describing the Kolkata incident as 'heart-wrenching' and 'disgraceful,' Singh addressed the broader issue of women's safety and health. While he did not directly name the Bengal government, his comments seemed to reflect growing criticism of the state’s response, which has faced accusations of a potential cover-up.

"Despite significant changes and efforts, there is still much work to be done regarding atrocities and crimes against women in our country," Singh remarked. He noted that while the central government has adopted a stringent approach towards such crimes, many states have not demonstrated the same level of sincerity and urgency.

Singh also emphasised that under the Narendra Modi administration, the law had been amended to include the death penalty for heinous crimes like rape, showcasing the government's commitment to tackling violence against women.
