'A leading light of the Left': PM Modi mourns death of CPM leader Sitaram Yechury

PTC Web Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the death of CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, describing him as "a leading light of the Left."

"Saddened by the passing away of Shri Sitaram Yechury ji. He was a leading light of the Left and known for his ability to connect across the political spectrum. He also made his mark as an effective Parliamentarian. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti," PM Modi shared on X.


Sitaram Yechury, aged 72, passed away at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi on Thursday after a prolonged illness.

President Droupadi Murmu, in her statement, praised Yechury for being a committed ideologue who garnered friendships across party lines. "Saddened to learn about the demise of CPI(M) General Secretary Shri Sitaram Yechury. As a student leader, national politician, and parliamentarian, he had a distinct and influential voice. Though firmly committed to his ideology, he forged friendships beyond political boundaries. My heartfelt condolences to his family and colleagues," President Murmu wrote on X.

Other political leaders also mourned the veteran leader's passing. Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, said, "Sitaram Yechury ji was a friend, a protector of the Idea of India with a deep understanding of our country. I will miss the long discussions we used to have. My sincere condolences to his family, friends, and followers in this hour of grief."

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also expressed his sorrow, stating, "My heartfelt condolences on the passing of Comrade Sitaram Yechury ji. He was a humble leader who balanced personal relationships with steadfast political ideologies. An excellent Parliamentarian and intellectual, he served the people with pragmatism blended with idealism. His loss is a significant blow to all liberal forces. The Indian polity will deeply miss him."
