Maharashtra elections 2024: Candidate Balasaheb Shinde dies of heart attack at polling booth in Beed
Maharashtra elections 2024: An independent candidate contesting from Maharashtra's Beed constituency died of a massive heart attack while waiting to cast his vote on Wednesday. The incident occurred at the Chhatrapati Shahu Vidyalaya polling centre. Balasaheb Shinde collapsed suddenly at the polling station and was rushed to Kaku Nana Hospital in Beed, then taken to Chhatrapati Shambhaji Nagar Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The body has been sent for a post-mortem examination, the police confirmed.
Under Section 52 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, voting in the constituency can be postponed if a candidate dies during the election process.
Maharashtra is holding elections across 288 Assembly seats to form a new government, with vote counting scheduled for November 23. The Beed Assembly constituency, once a bastion of Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), now witnesses competition between the BJP-Shiv Sena-Ajit Pawar alliance and other factions after the NCP split.
