Lok Sabha Session 2024: PM Modi takes 'Emergency' swipe at Congress; Opposition gives sharp reply

Lok Sabha Session 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi started the first Parliament session of his third term on the front foot, launching a 'Emergency' attack on the main Opposition Congress before the Lok Sabha met this morning.

Addressing the media prior to the House meeting, the Prime Minister stated that tomorrow, June 25, marks the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, which he described as a "black spot" in the country's democracy.

This Parliament session follows the general elections, and the Opposition is encouraged by an impressive performance that kept the BJP below the majority mark. The Prime Minister has returned to power with the support of NDA allies, and the Opposition intends to use its numerical benefit to corner the government on the House floor.

The tone of the Prime Minister's address, on the other hand, suggests that the BJP may have suffered a setback, but it has no intention of giving in to the opposition. The Prime Minister assured the people that the government would work three times harder in its third term and achieve three times the results.

Referring to the Emergency imposed by the then-Indira Gandhi government, he stated, "Tomorrow marks 50 years of the black spot on Indian democracy. The new generation will never forget how the Indian Constitution was scrapped, the country was turned into a prison, and democracy was captured. On this 50th anniversary, the country will pledge that it will never happen again."

India needs a responsible opposition: PM Modi

The Prime Minister stated that the government will always try to bring everyone along to serve the country and its people, but also delivered a stern message to the opposition. "India needs a responsible opposition; people want substance, not slogans; they want debate, diligence, not drama and disruption in Parliament. I hope the opposition lives up to the people's expectations," he stated.

He stated that the country has high expectations of MPs and urged them to take every possible step to benefit the public. The Prime Minister congratulated the newly elected MPs.

Opposition's sharp reply

The Prime Minister's comments and swipes at the Congress elicited a sharp response. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated that the country expected the Prime Minister to address the NEET protests, the train accident in West Bengal, and the ongoing violence in Manipur.

"You're warning the opposition. You are talking about the 50-year-old Emergency, but have forgotten the undeclared Emergency of the last ten years," Kharge said, adding that the people have "given a mandate against Modiji." The Congress chief stated that the INDIA Opposition bloc will raise the people's voices both inside and outside of Parliament.
