Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Punjab sees a drop in polling this time, records 55.98% voter turnout
Punjab Lok Sabha Elections 2024: The voter turnout in Punjab for the 2024 Lok Sabha election was 55.98% as of 10 p.m. on Saturday, a drop from the 2019 Parliamentary election. The voting was peaceful across the state.
In the 2024 election, Punjab had a total voter turnout of 55.98% for the 13 Lok Sabha seats, compared to 65.94% in 2019.
Punjab witnessed a four-cornered electoral battle between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which won a landslide victory in the state in 2022, its main challenger, the Congress, the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP).
Meanwhile, Chandigarh's lone seat saw a 67.90% voter turnout in the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The Union Territory had a 70.61% turnout in the 2019 Lok Sabha election. In Chandigarh, the BJP's Sanjay Tandon was up against the Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) joint candidate of the Congress party, Manish Tewari.
Moreover, the Election Commission announced that the counting of votes for the General Election 2024 will begin on June 4 at 8 a.m.
Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh Sandhu, met with all Chief Electoral Officers (CEO) and Returning Officers (RO) to review counting day preparations. The poll body stated that the counting trends and results, as entered by RO/ARO for AC/PC, will be available on the ECI Website as well as the Voter Helpline App, which is available on both iOS and Android.
