Congress' Charanjit Singh Channi takes dig at AAP

Charanjit Singh Channi, former Punjab Chief Minister, accused AAP workers of giving rations and clothes to woo votes in the Jalandhar constituency.

"Aam Aadmi Party and Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, fearing their defeat in Jalandhar, want to win the election by using every means. Today in the constituency, AAP workers were caught distributing ration and clothes to lure people, who left all the goods on the spot and ran away," Channi posted on X.

"Bhagwant Maan can put all his effort but the people of Jalandhar have made up their minds to break the pride of power," he added.

Voting begins

Voting for by-elections in Jalandhar West Assembly seat along with other 12 Assembly constituencies across seven states began at 7 am on Wednesday.

Jalandhar West Assembly Bypoll 2024 HIGHLIGHTS  | Voting in Jalandhar West Assembly by-elections has started. The Jalandhar West (Scheduled Caste-reserved) seat became vacant following the resignation of the sitting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA, Sheetal Angural, who switched to the BJP on March 27, along with the then-AAP Lok Sabha MP from Jalandhar, Sushil Kumar Rinku.

The campaigning for the high-stakes bypoll ended on Monday evening, with all major political parties making every attempt to woo voters. All parties planned meetings, rallies, and media engagements. Senior leaders from all parties campaigned for their candidates, with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann addressing a public meeting on the final day.

The byelection will be crucial for the ruling AAP, which suffered defeat in the recently concluded Lok Sabha Elections, winning only three of the 13 seats.

AAP has fielded Mohinder Bhagat, the son of former minister and BJP MLA Bhagat Chunni Lal. Bhagat joined the AAP after leaving the BJP last year.

The Congress has named Surinder Kaur, a former senior deputy mayor and five-time municipal councillor in Jalandhar, as their candidate. She is a known Dalit leader from the Ravidassia community.

The BJP has fielded Angural, who switched sides in March after leaving the AAP. He won this seat in the 2022 Punjab assembly elections on an AAP ticket. Angural comes from the Sialkotia Ravidassia community.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has announced its support for Binder Kumar, the Bahujan Samaj Party's nominee.

The reserved seat contains 1.72 lakh voters from Dalit communities including Ravidassia, Valmiki, and Bhagat. It has the biggest concentration of Bhagat community members in Punjab, with approximately 20% of the electorate.
