Jalandhar MP Charanjit Channi apologises after Punjab women panel's notice over controversial remarks

PTC Web Desk:  Jalandhar MP Charanjit Singh Channi has tendered an apology following a notice from the Punjab State Women’s Commission regarding his controversial remarks during an election campaign in Gidderbaha. Charanjit Singh Channi, while campaigning for the Punjab bypolls, had made statements allegedly targeting women, as well as members of the Brahmin and Jatt communities.

The women’s commission had summoned Channi to appear in person by 11 am on Tuesday to present his side. Addressing the media, the Jalandhar MP said, “My values do not align with making such comments. However, if my words have hurt anyone’s sentiments, I sincerely apologise. Women have been instrumental in electing me, and my family has taught me to seek forgiveness when necessary.”

Channi said, “This is not the first time I have been served a notice during the elections. I do not wish to dwell on such matters, but I deeply regret any hurt caused by my remarks.” The commission had said it would write to the Lok Sabha Speaker about the issue. Meanwhile, the Punjab Election Commission clarified that it had not received any formal complaint regarding the incident but assured action if one is filed.

The controversy arose after Charanjit Singh Channi, during his campaign, said, “A Jatt has two wives, and they call each other ‘the wife of a dog.’ This is exactly the state of BJP and AAP.” Following these comments, the women’s commission issue a notice to Charanjit Singh Channi.
