Jaishankar on Trump 2.0: 'Foreign policy must adapt to unforeseen challenges'

PTC Web Desk: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday described former US President Donald Trump as an "American nationalist" while emphasising the strength of India-US relations.

Speaking at an interactive session at Delhi University's Hansraj College, Jaishankar reflected on global diplomacy and India's evolving foreign policy. When asked whether Trump was a friend or foe to India, he responded, "I recently attended his oath-taking ceremony and received good treatment. I believe he is an American nationalist."

Jaishankar acknowledged that Donald Trump's policies could significantly impact global affairs but asserted that India's diplomatic approach would always prioritise national interests. "Yes, he will bring many changes—some unexpected—but we must adapt our foreign policy in the best interest of the nation," he said.

He also highlighted the strong personal rapport between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, stating, "Our relationship with the US is strong, and PM Modi shares a good personal relationship with Trump."

During the session, Jaishankar spoke about India's growing global influence, noting that perceptions about the country have evolved. "Even non-Indians claim to be Indian, believing it helps them in certain situations, like getting a seat on a plane," he remarked.

Reflecting on his own career transition from diplomacy to politics, Jaishankar said, "I never imagined becoming a bureaucrat. My entry into politics was unexpected—call it fate, or call it Modi. He persuaded me in a way no one could refuse."

He also highlighted India's role in supporting its citizens abroad. "Indians who go overseas still turn to us for assistance. We remain their guardians beyond borders," he said.
