Haryana Assembly elections 2024: AAP releases second list of candidates

PTC Web Desk: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday released its second list of candidates for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections 2024. It has named candidates for nine seats in the 90-member state legislature. The announcement comes as the party continues its pre-election campaign amidst stalled alliance talks with the Congress, its former rival-turned-partner in the opposition alliance, INDIA bloc.

The second list, made public on AAP’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, follows the release of the party’s first list of 20 candidates just a day earlier. The announcement of candidates is taking place as AAP intensifies its efforts to gain a foothold in Haryana’s electoral landscape, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has held power since 2014.

"The party hereby announces the following candidates for the state elections for Haryana Assembly," the AAP wrote in its post, unveiling the names of candidates who will contest from various constituencies in Haryana. Among the fresh names declared are prominent local leaders and professionals from diverse backgrounds.

In its second list, the AAP has announced tickets for the following candidates:

Rita Bamaniya from Sadhaura

Krishan Bajaj from Thanesar

Hawa Singh from Indri

Mukhtiyar Singh Bazigar from Ratia

Advocate Bhupendra Beniwal from Adampur

Professor Chhatar Pal Singh from Barwala

Jawahar Lal from Bawal

Pravesh Mehta from Faridabad

Abash Chandela from Tigaon

The announcement of candidates comes as pre-poll alliance negotiations between AAP and Congress remain at a standstill. Both parties had contested together in the earlier Lok Sabha Elections this year under the INDIA bloc—a larger opposition coalition led by Congress to challenge the BJP in multiple states, including Delhi and Haryana.

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, of the 10 parliamentary constituencies in Haryana, the Congress fielded candidates in nine, leaving only Kurukshetra for AAP. However, AAP’s candidate in Kurukshetra was defeated, while Congress secured five seats in the state. This poor performance by AAP in its home turf, where Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has significant influence, has added complexity to the alliance talks between the two parties. Despite being partners in the INDIA alliance at the national level, AAP and Congress have yet to finalise a seat-sharing agreement for the Haryana Assembly elections 2024.
