Haryana Assembly elections 2024: AAP, Congress 'fail' to reach seat-sharing agreement

Haryana Assembly elections 2024: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress have been unable to agree on seat-sharing arrangements for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections 2024, as reported by India Today TV. Both parties, which are members of the opposition INDIA bloc at the national level, may contest the elections independently.

Sources said AAP sought to contest at least 10 seats, but the Congress was only willing to allocate three. Despite an initial in-principle agreement to collaborate on the Haryana Assembly elections 2024, negotiations broke down. Congress leader Deepak Babaria, who is overseeing alliance talks, said an alliance would only proceed if it resulted in a mutually beneficial outcome for both parties.

AAP had pushed for specific seats, including Kalayat and one in the Kurukshetra region. With no progress in discussions, Haryana AAP chief Sushil Gupta announced that the party would release its full candidate list if Congress did not make a decision by the evening.

As a result, AAP has announced its first list of 20 candidates for the October 5 Haryana Assembly elections. The party has fielded Haryana unit vice president Anurag Dhanda in Kalayat, Indu Sharma in Bhiwani, Vikas Nehra in Meham, and Bijender Hooda in Rohtak.

Meanwhile, the Congress has released a list of 41 candidates and is finalising a total of 49 candidates for Haryana’s 90 Assembly constituencies, according to sources. The Assembly elections are scheduled for October 5, with the vote counting set for October 8.
