Centre proposes sites for Manmohan Singh memorial, awaits family’s decision
PTC Web Desk: The Central Government has started the process of constructing a memorial for former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. The government has presented suggestions for potential sites to his family, who are tasked with selecting a location to begin the project.
Sources said approximately 1 to 1.5 acres of land near Rajghat, Rashtriya Smriti Sthal, or Kisan Ghat has been proposed for the memorial. Officials from the Ministry of Urban Development have inspected these areas. According to the new policy, land for the memorial can only be allocated to a trust, making the formation of a trust a key step to move forward with the project. Once the trust is established, it will apply for land allocation, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed with the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) for construction.
There is a possibility that the memorial could be located near Rajghat, where the final resting places of notable leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and Sanjay Gandhi are situated.
This development follows a recent political clash between the BJP and Congress over the memorial. The Congress criticised the BJP for blocking their request to hold Dr Singh's last rites at a site designated for a memorial. The BJP, in turn, accused the Congress of indulging in “cheap politics.” Dr Manmohan Singh died on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92.
