1984 anti-Sikh riots case: CBI files charge sheet against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler

New Delhi, May 20: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday filed charge sheet against Congress's Jagdish Tytler in connection with Pul Bangash Gurdwara fire case, during 1984 anti-Sikh riots.


As many as three Sikhs were killed and a gurdwara was burnt in the Pul Bangash area in Delhi on November 1, 1984. It came a day after then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated.

In the charge sheet filed before a special court here, the CBI said Jagdish Tytler “incited, instigated and provoked the mob assembled at Pul Bangash Gurdwara Azad Market” on November 1, 1984, that resulted in burning down of the gurdwara and killing of three Sikhs identified as Thakur Singh, Badal Singh and Guru Charan Singh.

The charges have been invoked under Sections 147 (rioting), 109 (abetment) read with 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The charges would be considered on June 2.

Notably, Justice Nanavati Commission of Inquiry was set up in 2000 by the Government of India to inquire into the incidents of 1084 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi. After consideration of the Commission’s report, the Ministry of Home Affairs (Government of India) issued directions to the CBI to investigate the case against then MP Tytler and others. 

During the CBI investigation, evidences came on record that on November 1, 1984, the said accused allegedly instigated, incited and provoked the mob assembled at Gurdwara Pul Bangash at Azad Market, Delhi which resulted inthe  burning of Gurdwara Pul Bangash and killing of three Sikh persons by the mob, apart from burning and looting of shops. 

After investigation, a charge sheet has been filed on May 20.
