Yemen President sanctions Kerala's Nimisha Priya's death sentence; MEA says 'extending all help'
PTC News Desk: Nimisha Priya, a resident of Kerala has been awarded death penalty in Yemen for killing a Yemen national. President of Yemen Rashad al-Alimi sanctioned death penalty for Nimisha Priya on Monday. Priya has been incarcerated in Yemen since 2017. Meanwhile ministry of external affairs has assured all possible help to Nimisha's family.
"We are aware of the sentencing of Nimisha Priya in Yemen. We understand that the family of Nimisha Priya is exploring relevant options. The government is extending all possible help in the matter," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, said.

Nimisha Priya, a native of Kerala's Palakkad district was apprehended in Yemen over alleged murder of Yemeni national Talal Abdo Mehdi in July 2017. A trial court in Sana'a sentenced her to death in 2020 and her appeal was dismissed by Yemen's Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023.
Nimisha's mother Prema Kumari met her daughter for the first time in 11 years in April 2024. Since then she is in Yemen to secure her daughter's release.
