Year Ender 2023: As the curtains fall on 2023, the nation finds itself grappling with the aftermath of a series of murders that have reverberated across the collective conscience of India. Five tales, each with its own chilling narrative, have unfolded over the course of the year, leaving an indelible mark on the social landscape. 

India witnessed a series of murders that reverberated through the collective conscience of the nation, sending shockwaves that transcended regional boundaries in 2023. Each of these crimes, marked by its own chilling details, unfolded as tragic narratives that not only claimed lives but also exposed the grim underbelly of human nature. 

Nikki Yadav Murder Case

The gruesome and spine-chilling murder incident sent shockwaves across Nation wherein a 23-year-year old Haryana girl Nikki Yadav was allegedly killed by her 24-year-old boyfriend Sahil Gehlot with a charging cable and stuffed her body inside a refrigerator in his family’s dhaba in Mitraon village, located in southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh after the two had a very heated argument.

The horrific and fatal crime unfolded on February 9, 2023 in the Kashmiri Gate area, Delhi.
Nikki Yadav was a native of Jhajjar in Haryana and was pursuing her post-graduation in English from Greater Noida’s Galgotia College and lived with her younger sister in Delhi’s Bindapur. 

Shraddha Walkar Murder Case 

The gruesome murder of Shraddha Walkar has sent shockwaves through the entire world, and is considered one of the most gruesome and horrifying cases of 2023.

Shraddha Walkar was a 27-year-old Indian woman who was murdered by her 28-year-old boyfriend and live-in partner Aaftab Amin Poonawala in Delhi on 18 May 2022.The 28-year-old, dismembered Shraddha's body and stored the chopped body parts in a refrigerator before disposing of them in the forests of south Delhi's Chhatarpur, is currently in Judicial custody.

28-year-old Aaftab Poonawala strangled his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar over an argument and then proceeded to dismember her body into 35 pieces, allegedly to have preserved the chopped body parts in a refrigerator before dumping them in forested areas in Delhi and Gurugram.
Poonawala was arrested by the Delhi Police on 12 November 2022. 

                    
Kanjhawala hit-and-drag case

In the early months of 2023, a crime of passion unfolded, shaking a close-knit community, in which  20-year-old Anjali Singh, who was riding a scooter, was found dead on the street after being allegedly hit and dragged for several kilometres by a car driven by five youths in Outer Delhi's Kanjhawala area on January 1, 2023. 

The fatal incident unfolded when Anjali was riding scooter in Delhi's Sultanpuri area and Suzuki Baleno car collided with them. The five occupants of the car, admitting to being intoxicated, fled the scene, dragging Anjali's body for several kilometers.The autopsy revealed the cause of Anjali's death as "shock and hemorrhage due to injury to the head, spine, left femur, and both lower limbs," with 40 recorded injuries on her body.

The aftermath of this murder sent shockwaves through the community. 

Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed Murder

 
Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot by three men near a medical college in Prayagraj April 15.

Ahmad was named in more than 100 criminal cases, including the Umesh Pal murder case. In 2006, Ahmad and his aides abducted Umesh Pal and forced him to give a statement in court in their favour. The Supreme Court had in April 2019 directed that Ahmad be shifted to a high-security jail in Gujarat after he was accused of orchestrating the kidnapping and assault of Lucknow-based real-estate businessman Mohit Jaiswal while in jail.

Shahbad Dairy Murder

In yet another horrifying and dreadful murder case, Indian teenage girl Sakshi Reddy was allegedly killed after being stabbed multiple times and her head being crushed with a boulder by a 20-year-old man named Sahil in New Delhi's Shahbad Dairy area on May 28, 2023. 

Sakshi, who was in a relationship with Sahil for over three years, wanted to break up with him and the two had a quarrel on the matter on 27 May 2023. Their breakup reportedly enraged Sahil, who then decided to kill Sakshi.

A CCTV footage which went viral depicted Sahil purportedly stabbing the girl multiple times with a knife. He continued to stab her even when she slumped to the ground. He kicked her and then took a concrete slab lying nearby and bludgeoned her head. 

These incidents stand as a testament to the challenges faced by our society in ensuring safety and justice for its citizens.
