PTC Web Desk: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate (NEET PG 2024), which was scheduled to be held today (June 23), has been postponed. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) made the announcement on Saturday, just a day ahead of the scheduled date, sparking outrage among students. A new date will be announced soon.

In Points | What is NEET PG?

  • NEET PG is a national-level entrance test for all post-MBBS DNB courses, post-MBBS direct 6-year DrNB courses, and NBEMS diploma courses offered by medical colleges across the country.
  • The NBEMS, which reports to the Health Ministry, is in charge of conducting postgraduate and postdoctoral examinations in approved specialities that result in the awards of Diplomate of National Board (DNB) and Doctorate of National Board (DrNB), respectively.

Why is NEET PG 2024 postponed?

  • In light of the ongoing controversy surrounding some of the country's most important examinations - NEET UG for undergraduate medical admissions, UGC NET for JRF, appointment as Assistant Professor, and admission to PhD degree, and CSIR NET for JRF, Assistant Professorship, and PhD admissions in Science subjects - the Ministry of Health has decided to review the process of conducting the NEET PG examination.
  • Also, a day before the exam was cancelled, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), which conducts the NEET PG examination, cautioned that fraudulent persons were trying to dupe candidates on social media saying they could provide questions in exchange for money.
  • It should also be noted that a day before the exam was cancelled, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS), which administers the NEET PG examination, cautioned that fraudulent people were trying to dupe candidates on social media by offering to provide questions in exchange for money.
  • NBEMS has filed a police complaint against such fraudsters and their accomplices for attempting to dupe NEET-PG aspirants in the name of providing NEET-PG 2024 questions for a significant sum of money, the board said on Friday. It also warned the candidates that any direct or indirect involvement in such activities would be "appropriately dealt with".
  • However, unlike the UGC NET, there has been no official statement regarding a paper leak in NEET PG.

Uproar among students

Several students and parents expressed their dismay after the exam was postponed at the last minute. Many of the students had to travel to other cities to reach their exam centres.
