Who is General Upendra Dwivedi, new Indian Army chief?

PTC Web Desk: General Upendra Dwivedi, an ace infantry officer with extensive operational experience, took command of the Indian Army on Sunday.

The 30th Chief of the Indian Army is a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and served as Vice Chief of Army Staff beginning in February of this year.


Who is General Upendra Dwivedi?

- General Upendra Dwivedi is from Madhya Pradesh and went to Sainik School, Rewa. 

- He enrolled in the prestigious National Defence Academy in January 1981. He was commissioned into the 18th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles on December 15, 1984, where he later commanded in the Kashmir valley and Rajasthan's deserts.

- He was an outstanding sportsman since his school days, excelling in both NDA and IMA, where he received the Blue in Physical Training. He continued to excel after commissioning and received the gold medal in the Physical Training Course.

- The general officer has a unique distinction of having had balanced exposure in the Northern, Western, and Eastern Theatres, in a variety of terrain and operational environments such as deserts, high altitude, riverine, built-up areas, the North East, and Jammu and Kashmir.

- Aside from attending the Staff College in Wellington and the Higher Command Course at AWC in Mhow, the officer was named a 'Distinguished Fellow' in the prestigious NDC equivalent course at USAWC in Carlisle, USA. 

- In addition to his distinguished military career, he holds an M.Phil. in Defence & Management Studies and two Master's degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science, one of which is from USAWC in the United States. 

- He is married to Sunita Dwivedi, a science graduate and homemaker. Sunita Dwivedi is associated with Aarushi, a Bhopal-based institute for special-needs children. 

- The couple has two daughters who work for non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Military Career

- He led his battalion's active counter-terrorism operations in the Kashmir Valley and the Rajasthan Desert. 

- He has served as Major General of the Assam Rifles and Sector Commander as a Brigadier. Assam Rifles took part in intense counterterrorism operations and held a variety of other staff command positions in the North East, including pioneering the first-ever compendium on Indo-Myanmar border management.

- From 2022 to 2024, he commanded the Rising Star Corps on the Western Front and the prestigious Northern Army in an extremely challenging operational environment. During his command, he provided strategic guidance and operational oversight for the planning and execution of long-term operations along the northern and western borders, as well as orchestrating dynamic counter-terrorism operations in J-K.

- He has diverse staff experience, including managing conventional operations of the Armed Brigade in the Punjab Plains, providing logistical support to a Mountain Division in the North-East along the Northern Borders, and running a Strike Corps in deserts. Military Operations Directorate.

- Later, as DG Infantry, he oversaw and expedited capital procurement cases for weapons across all three services, resulting in significant and visible capability enhancements for our Armed Forces. 

- As Deputy Chief, he promoted automation and the adoption of niche technology in the Indian Army.
