What triggered the violent protest in Manipur and why are localities protesting ?
PTC News Desk: The hilly state Manipur is on the boil with fresh cases related to violence being reported with clashes amongst Kuki and Meitei communities. The violence has also caused localities to launch protest causing the government to impose indefinite curfew with school and colleges being shut till November 19.
What triggered the fresh violence in the state and why are locals protesting? Here's the reason:
Manipur has been witnessing clashes amongst Kuki and Meitei communities since May last year. With situation being under control since past few months, there has been a sudden surge in the violent cases in the state. The violence broke out after bodies of six people from Maeitei community were discovered in a decomposed state.
These people had taken refuge under a shelter camp who went missing for the past week after a gunfight between militants and security forces that killed 10 insurgents. Bodies of a woman and two children were found on Friday and on Saturday, bodies of the other three - two women and a child were recovered from a river. After the death of six residents, fresh cases of violent incidents were reported and an ultimatum was issued to both central andstate government. The spokesperson of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI)-led civil society groups, Khuraijam Athouba said in a statement, “All the MLAs and other leaders must sit together to take decisive action to resolve the present crisis at the earliest. If they do not take any decisive action that satisfies the people, the government will bear the brunt of the people's discontent and anger.”
Soon after the state reported fresh cases of violence, the National Investigating Agency took over the probe in the matter. These incidents led to the death of several people and disruption of public order. The agency has taken over these cases from the Manipur Police following a recent order issued by the Home Ministry.
Violent protest have engulfed the entire state with impositon of indefinite curfew along with shutting of schools and colleges. Internet services have also been suspended in seven districts of the state. While protestors being all up in the arm, strongly demonstrated against the violence, they attacked the residences of MLAs, torched their houses, set tyres on fire
