What is dermatomyositis? The rare condition affecting 'Dangal' actress Suhani Bhatnagar

PTC News Desk: The sudden passing of Dangal actress Suhani Bhatnagar has left the nation in mourning. At just 19 years old, Suhani breathed her last at Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), sparking profound shock and sadness.

In the aftermath of her tragic demise, Suhani's parents opened up to the media, shedding light on their daughter's health struggles. Suhani's father, Puneet Bhatnagar, disclosed that she was battling an autoimmune condition known as dermatomyositis.

According to Mr. Bhatnagar, Suhani began experiencing swelling in her hands approximately two months prior. Despite numerous consultations with medical professionals, including dermatologists and various tests, the elusive nature of her ailment persisted. It wasn't until she was admitted to AIIMS that dermatomyositis was identified, prompting immediate treatment.

"The only treatment for this disease is steroids," Mr. Bhatnagar explained. "However, the immunosuppressive nature of the treatment compromised Suhani's immune system, rendering her susceptible to infections. Tragically, her condition deteriorated rapidly, resulting in respiratory failure due to lung damage caused by fluid accumulation in her body."

Reflecting on Suhani's aspirations, her mother expressed immense pride in her daughter's accomplishments. "Suhani made all of us proud," she remarked. "She was pursuing a course in Mass Communication and Journalism, with dreams of pursuing acting once she completed her studies."

Suhani Bhatnagar's untimely passing serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by rare diseases and underscores the importance of early diagnosis and comprehensive medical care.
