Violence erupts at Mahayajna in Kurukshetra: Security guards open fire on Brahmins
PTC Web Desk: Tension erupted at a 1008-Kundiya Mahayajna in Kurukshetra, Haryana, after security guards allegedly opened fire on Brahmins attending the event. The incident occurred around 9.30 am on Saturday, leaving one Brahmin injured by a bullet, while another sustained injuries due to stone pelting.
The situation quickly escalated into violence, with agitated Brahmins clashing with private security personnel hired by the event organisers. In the ensuing chaos, 20-21 Brahmins were injured, and a large-scale protest broke out, resulting in vandalism and road blockades.
According to eyewitnesses, the violence erupted following a dispute over stale food. The injured Brahmin, Ashish Tiwari from Lucknow, stated that the attendees had been served stale food repeatedly, leading to several confrontations with security personnel over the past few days.
"We went to have breakfast, but it smelled bad. When we protested, the security guard abused us. When we said we would complain to Baba, they started beating us with sticks and bricks. These security guards were falsely presented as government personnel," Tiwari alleged.
In response to the firing, an enraged crowd of Brahmins stormed out of the yajna site, broke the main gate, and vandalised banners and hoardings on the road. They then blocked the Kurukshetra-Kaithal highway, forcibly stopping passing vehicles.
The Kurukshetra police intervened, attempting to pacify the protesters. However, when the crowd refused to disperse, a mild lathi-charge was conducted to clear the blockade. Security has now been heightened in the area.
The yajna’s organiser, Acharya Swami Shubh, dismissed the violence as the work of miscreants and assured that an internal probe was underway. “Why would we want disruptions in our own yajna? We are investigating, and strict action will be taken against those responsible,” he said.
Kurukshetra police spokesperson said two persons had been injured—one due to a gunshot and another from stone pelting. "The accused security guard has been identified, and action is being taken. The protesters were dispersed peacefully without excessive force," he added.
