Vijay Mallya to Tahawwur Rana: Fugitives India attempts to extradite
PTC News Desk: Indian authorities has sought Rana's extradition for his alleged role in the attacks that targeted multiple locations in Mumbai. Rana's co-conspirators included, among others, David Headley. Headley pleaded guilty and cooperated against Rana.
The US Supreme Court has approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana who was convicted in 26/22 Mumbai attacks, to India. Besides Rana, there are several other fugitives that India is trying to seek extradition of.
Tahawwur Rana
Rana, a Canadian businessman of Pakistani origin, is sought for his involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which claimed the lives of over 160 people. A former military doctor in the Pakistan Army, he is believed to have had prior knowledge of the attacks. In 2009, he was arrested for a terror plot in Denmark. In addition to this, he has been convicted for providing material support to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Recently, the US Supreme Court approved his extradition to India.
Vijay Mallya
Liquor magnate Vijay Mallya, who is facing a loan default case exceeding Rs 9,000 crore, departed from India in 2016 and is currently residing in the UK. He is wanted in India for fraud following the downfall of his now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines. Mallya was declared a fugitive in 2019, and India is engaged in a prolonged legal battle to secure his extradition, which shows no signs of concluding soon. Meanwhile, a CBI court issued a new non-bailable warrant against him last year in connection with a separate Rs 180 crore loan default case.
Nirav Modi
Diamantaire Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi are the main suspects in the Rs 14,000 crore PNB loan fraud case. They are being investigated for their alleged connection with bank officials who aided them in carrying out the fraud. Nirav Modi left India in 2018 and was arrested in London that same year. Currently imprisoned in a UK jail, he has lost all his attempts to contest extradition to India. Mehul Choksi, on the other hand, is currently in Antigua.
Anmol Bishnoi
Younger brother of Lawrence Bishnoi, Anmol is wanted in India for several high-profile cases including murder of Punjabi singer and Sidhu Moosewala and NCP leader Baba Siddiqui. According to the reports, Anmol was arrested in US last year on the charges of entering country without valid documents. New Delhi has requested US authorities for his custody.
Arsh Dalla
The de-facto leader of banned outfit Khalistan Tiger Force, Arshdeep Singh Gill alias Arsh Dalla is based in Canada and wanted in more than 50 cases of murder extortion and terrorist cases. Dalla was arrested last October after he was injured in an attack. Since then, India has been trying to extradite him, but he secured a bail in December.
