Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar reiterates criticism of judiciary, says 'Parliament is supreme'

PTC News Desk: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar doubled down on criticism of judicial 'overreach' and reiterated that the "Parliament is supreme."

"Elected representatives will be the ultimate masters of what the constitution will be and there won't be any authority above it. Parliament is supreme," he said amid the ongoing debate over judiciary versus executive.

Several BJP leaders and the Vice President recently criticized the Supreme Court for exceeding its authority and intruding into the responsibilities of the executive branch.

While reviewing a petition calling for the imposition of President's Rule in Bengal and the deployment of paramilitary forces, Justice BR Gavai remarked, "You want us to issue a writ of mandamus directing the President to impose this? We’re already being accused of overstepping into the executive's domain."

Earlier that Thursday, the Vice President had criticized the Supreme Court for prescribing a timeline for the President to approve bills passed by a state legislature.

Calling for accountability for the judiciary, Dhankhar said, "So, we have judges who will legislate, who will perform executive functions, who will act as super Parliament and absolutely have no accountability because the law of the land does not apply to them.”
